As I went online to read my friends blog, I began to think of how easy it is to share information online. She is taking a gap year in Israel and while phone calls can be expensive, it has been easy to find other ways to stay in touch with her like through Facebook and her blog. The Internet is a way for humans to share ideas with a mass audience. Cyberspace has created a world that upholds Thomas Jefferson’s belief, “that ideas should freely spread form one to another over the globe, for the moral and mutual instruction of man, and improvement of his condition.” This type of free flowing ideas has been achieved through the Internet and has lead to innovation. Cyberspace is a way for one idea to lead to the formation of another idea, a way where someone in America can talk to her friend in Israel. Lawrence Lessig, author of "Open Code and Open Societies," states, “we are given a new incentive to produce new work, but that new work then becomes part of an intellectual commons, for others to draw upon and use as they wish” (11). The mass of information known as the Internet is a tool for education and learning. Not only are we able to share ideas through the Internet, but we are also allowed to share them without being judge. Cyberspace is a world free of prejudice, and for some it truly the only place we can be ourselves, voice our opinions without someone passing some type of judgment about the way we dress, our race, or our social economic status. (John Barlow). Cyberspace levels the playing field for everyone and is a true space to exercise freedom of speech. Since, cyberspace is a common resource the government should not try to control it. While we accept some restrictions on the Internet, just like we accept that a park (another example of a common resource) closes at a certain time, the government should not be in charge of Cyberspace. Innovation could slow down and our ideas would not reach as many people. Cyberspace has created so many opportunities especially in exercising our right to freedom of speech that it should continue to stay the same open society.
Megan,
ReplyDeleteWhen reading your post I have to say I agree completely. Cyberspace is one of those arenas where knowledge should be passed around for the sake of bettering oneself and bettering the world around you. If say the government were to take away this medium then who knows what we could be taking away from ourselves and form society. Cyberspace should continue the way it is a form of expression where anybody can go to share their thoughts, ideas or feeling about anything.
